Welcome to my first Blog Post
SAVERS
vs
Goodwill
You may or may not have passed by these two thrift stores. Perhaps you were scared to enter or scared of what others thought of you if you shopped there. But what you do not know is what treasures are behind these doors.
Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Jimmy Choo, Marchesa, Givenchy you name it I have found it at these thrift stores and the list goes on. Whether its sitting in my closet happy or made a buyer of mine happy. I'm confident in knowing that my knowledge of forward fashion and labels is never wasted.
Now the real questions Savers vs. Goodwill, better deals? Cleaner atmosphere? Better quality? I will answer all of your questions.
Savers is a new and upcoming Thrift Store that is better than Goodwill all around. Savers is still new and rapidly growing in many locations. Which is a plus for them because Savers are genuinely always clean, and they keep up with cleanliness. You cannot beat Savers phenomenal prices! Where else can you find an Authentic mini Burberry Nova Check Purse like this one for under $4.00?!?! The answer is simple NOWHERE!! This purse retails for $69.00 in a Burberry retail store.
I know what your thinking, I've been to Savers and every-time I go there I never find anything. The answer is because if you are serious about finding a good deal you need to be a serial thrifting shopper (as I would like to call it). Meaning you need to get to know the people who work there. You need to know the schedule of when new inventory is put out and what times to shop there. Example my specialty is purses and accessories so I've friended the employee who does the purses. She has told me the inside secrets and schedules of when the good stuff comes out and what the colors mean on the labels at Savers. Every-time I go to Savers I have a plan of attack. I B-Line it to the Purses (usually on a side or back wall) usually look at every purse, wallet & bag, then go to the scarves and belts. Then back track to the glass case. Chances are anything worthy of frugal finds will not be in the glass case. Mainly items in the glass case are FAKE and way over priced. Another plus about shopping at Savers is most of employees do not know what is real or fake. I can spot a fake 5 feet away (We will go deeper into that later).
Goodwill used to be my Go-To Frugal Finds Shop. But with the competition of my local Savers on the same road, there really is no comparison anymore. Do I still shop at Goodwill, yes once in a while. But I do not find the amazing deals and the high end designer deals at Goodwill anymore. They did away with their incentives for repeat customers like myself. The points system they used to have saved you 20% off your entire purchase when you reached a certain number of points. If you shopped there a lot it was easier to achieve this discount. Unfortunately they no longer have this incentive. Now they have a new program in which they take 5% your entire purchase when you spend over $20.00. Do not get me wrong this is still a good deal, anything to save a buck. But Savers has stamp cards where when you fill the card you get 30% off you entire purchase order. To fill the stamp cards you purchase at the store or you can donate to get stamps and there is no limit to how many cards you can get and they usually have these stamp cards around the holidays or when they decide they need to clear out the store for new merchandise. One of the only reasons why I still shop at Goodwill is because they have a contract with Target (Tar-jeea). Goodwill Thrift Stores get Targets final markdown items or sometimes returns. Which sometimes its a risk but 85% of the time its well worth the price in the long run.
Overall I base my decisions on money and where I can get the best deal. In the end it all comes down to money...right? Its all about finding that diamond in the rough at Savers.

Very interesting information! Thanks I will be running down to my local savers tomorrow!
ReplyDeleteA few comments: 1) Savers' prices vary GREATLY by location (even within the same metropolitan area), so buyers need to be very careful - in MANY instances, Goodwill is cheaper. 2) Savers' prices have steadily increased at all their locations across the US in the past few years while Goodwill's prices have remained fairly constant which is probably because 3) Goodwill is a "true" charity that provides work training and other opportunities to those in need whereas SAVERS (and its associated stores, Unique Thrift and Value Village) is a FOR-PROFIT organization that pays whatever local charity its associated with something like $10 per bag. For a "real" thrift store deal, try Salvation Army - more and more of their stores are "upgrading" their facilities (and their prices) but Salvation Army is a "true" charity (providing assistance to addicts and those in need locally, nationally and internationally) and prices at Salvation Army stores are generally lower than Savers or Goodwill.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Anonymous about the prices. Savers has increased significantly they are selling dresses for $19.99!!! too much. What I like about Savers is that on holidays you can really get good deals. All clothing and shoes are 50% off no matter what the color of the tag is. So that is a great deal because Goodwill doesn't do that. So that $20 dress i can get for $10 and is still a good deal. Now about Goodwill, what i really like about them is that on certain days, like Wednesday, seniors get 50% off everything including furniture something not even Savers does on holidays. I've gotten some good furniture pieces at a really good price. Like with everything shop around and find out what sales they have and when.
ReplyDeleteHere in Arkansas, Goodwill marks certain items for 50% off each week. I love shopping at Goodwill because new items are cycled every day. It's like walking into a whole new store. The prices and deals vary between states though, so it's worth checking out what sales your local goodwill might have.
ReplyDeleteIs savers the same as goodwill
ReplyDeleteSaves is my favorite and regardless of location prices you will always get a good deal for brand name finds . Thanks for your blog! I’m moving to NH and I’m mortified not to have savers but I found one !
